This past weekend, my friend Airi (who has appeared on this blog before) had a birthday dinner with 18 others at a sushi restaurant in the next town over. To prepare for it, Jenny decided to put together some surprise cupcakes. Personally, I’m not a big fan of cupcakes. They’re usually always too sweet and a variation of vanilla or chocolate. But it turns out if you make a cupcake out of matcha, it can be really amazing. The particular cupcake Jenny made was paired with icing with a hint of red bean.

From the photography side, I’m really starting to get what makes for good shots of food. Large directional light adds depth and texture. Accessories and foreground elements really help bring the composition together too. I’ll probably never be a talented baker, but I’m slowly learning how to take better and better food photos. Feel free to message me if you want me to photograph your culinary masterpieces!

Special thanks to Jenny for letting me tag along and take pictures of her work. Check out her post on Instagram to see the final product and more behind the scenes!
