Boston Shoot VIII – For the Gram

I sometimes joke that I’ll do something for the gram.  In most cases, it just involves me taking a few extra steps in order to take the shot.  Other times it involves going a little bit more out of the way.

Lawn on D is a leisure spot with an open field, large Jenga, table tennis, cornhole and some swings.  The interesting thing about these particular swings is that they glow bluish/pink based on kinetic energy.  Because of this, the Lawn has become a popular Instagram spot during the spring and summer months.  The forecast for the day was supposed to be rain all day, so I didn’t think I’d be able to make the trip before I went home to New York.  Luckily, it cleared up right around sunset, so I broke out my gear, my prism, and convinced Kristi to do some exploring.

In the end, Kristi and I spent about two hours just taking photos at the one swing.  I honestly didn’t think we were there for that long.  My 17-50mm lens wasn’t fast enough to take photos as the sun set, so I had to switch to my 50mm f1.8 for the rest of the night.  If was able to shoot wider, I think there would be more of the park and more context in the pictures.  That 35mm f1.4 sounds really good right about now.

These shots were also some of the hardest edits I had to do.  It’s really difficult to make the colors blend well, while also drawing attention to details like eyes or hands.  But in the end, the soft pink and blue tones are what really sold me.

I can really fall in love with neon lights.
